Advice

> What is the hardest lesson you learned as a product manager?

When starting my company Complete Seating, we were focused on what problems hosts had in planning their night. When we would compare our solution to others it was very clear that someone had thought about what would be the perfect or beautiful way to solve the problem of managing tables. What they didn’t think about is how the human element added to the solution rather than hurt it.

In the end it is all about people. It is about the people you are building something for. It is about the people you are being paid by. It is about the people that you work with. If you are too caught up in building something for any other reason than people it probably doesn’t matter very much.

This is why user experience flows for great products will be very simple for the main case, but have a lot of interesting ‘edge cases.’ Humans are not computers so their usage isn’t ever neat. This is why it is so hard to replace legacy systems in place. All of the special cases are working against you.
