90’S METAL: Sober by Tool - I have stated on many occasions that Tool is one of my all-time favorite metal bands. When I first heard their Opiate EP in 1992, I knew that they had something special. They had the anger, the musicianship, and the tightness of a band that was on a mission. What they did not yet have was the material. As much as I enjoyed songs like Hush and Jerk-Off, there was nothing unexpected or new going on.
The following year Tool released their debut Undertow and you could start to see the progression from a band with potential to a band with a statement. While this album would make Tool a known quantity, it would not be till their next album Ænima that Tool would become Tool. In the meantime, we have songs like Sober, which was their breakthrough song, riding on the popularity of the stop-motion video that got significant MTV airplay. It is not my favorite song on the album, which I will post another time, but that opening bass riff is just killer. This should be a lesson to many other bands to stop burying the bass in the mix, the bass can literally make a song, as it does in this tune.
