Funds like First Round Capital, True Ventures, Foundry Group, HomeBrew, USV and many others are still run by the founders and are still on the mission they started. Early Stage. But as LA as a tech community grew massively the percentage of our LA deals went from 15% to 50% from 1996 to 2010 and it has remained solid since then.

Chris Dixon made the point that he thinks investors should look for the founders to have the domain knowledge rather than them having domain knowledge themselves. But while I prefer a certain naive optimism in founders I can’t see the logic that this extends to angel investors. And the best early-stage investors know this.

In the early days of the Internet as an advertising medium the industry organized to create “standard ad units&# for which most media companies would sell their inventory. The standards were set by the IAB ( Interactive Advertising Bureau ), which was founded in 1996. Normalizing ad units obviously has a benefit.
