PUMPKINS WEEK: To Sheila by Smashing Pumpkins - By 1997, there was no bigger rock band around. Mellon Collie was a massive success following on the previous success of Siamese Dream, so by the time the band got around to recording the follow-up, the expectations were immense. Given the weight of those expectations, the loss of James Chamberlin (kicked out for a drug overdose), and Billy Corgan’s own personal struggles, Adore could have been a trainwreck. Instead, it is an album of transitions, challenging yet still accessible, different yet entirely recognizable.
Many gravitate to the song Ava Adore as it is the heaviest and most familiar song to long time Pumpkins fans. Yet the opening song is the real highlight, which hearkens back to the earlier acoustic tracks of Pisces Iscariot. It has elements of country folk that migrate in, giving the song an earthiness that grounds the ethereal qualities of the tune, It’s a welcome change and a refreshing contrast to the excesses of their electronica experimentations that pervade the rest of the album.
