F'ING 90’S BANDS: The Way by Fastball - I did not think that there would be as many well known bands whose name starts with the letter “F”, but clearly I am mistaken. Faith No More which kicked off this week is probably the most well known, but Fastball had the biggest single hit of the bunch. This Austin, TX band was still working side jobs when their second album All The Pain Money Can Buy released in 1998 took them from obscurity to instant fame within six months.
I actually prefer their second single Out of My Head which was also a huge hit. But when I read the backstory for The Way, I knew that was the song for today. It was that song that rocketed up the charts to number 4 in the US (#1 on the Alternative chart). The song was inspired by the story of a local Texas couple, one that had Alzheimer’s and other having had recent brain surgery, that went missing after driving to a nearby festival. Two weeks later they were found dead in a ravine in another state. I am not entirely sure how many people actually knew that, but as quickly as Fastball rose in popularity, as quickly they fell. But for those few months of 1998 in between Marcy Playground and Semisonic, they ruled the radio.
