And in January I saw that digital music overtook physical media for the first time in 2011, something I expected since 1998. I bought the Diamond Rio mp3 player in 1998. A large percentage of startups never apply to either.

More recently, Eric Ries and Dave McClure added fuel to the fire (See Eric Ries’ blog post: Support the Startup Founders Visa with a tweet) and helped kick off a campaign on @ 2Gov. Towards the end of my OPT (mid 1998) is when the H1-B visa cap issue hit. In a startup cash is king.

What entrepreneur hasn't dreamed that our startup will experience the same magical beginnings as Google ? In 1998, before they even incorporated, Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page were trying to present their concept to early-stage, or "angel" investors, with limited success. These sites function a lot like the sites listed above, but investors get equity in your startup. Crowdfunder is another crowdfunding option, but this site is geared more toward entrepreneurial startups. It still runs on a fundraising premise, but the site boasts a large pool of investors as its main audience.

Twelve months into my startup journey I had four half-built websites that had been built by my four ex-technical co-founders. What makes software engineers different in the startup world is that they have the requisite skills to hack together an idea on their own if they so choose.
