I spent a chunk of my career as a product manager in search (Shopping.com, GLG, Ask.com, AOL and Google) so I find this particularly interesting. Until now, to succeed in search companies needed two things: 1) an index of the web 2) an algorithm to organise the results.

Florida-based ProductionHUB is a search engine for media and entertainment serving film, television, video, live event and digital media production. Searching through pages of crew and production services on another site used to be incredibly time consuming.

The Court of Justice of the EU ruled Google had to remove search results linking to a 1998 newspaper article about the foreclosure of his home (due to unpaid debts he later paid). For better or worse, search technology has permanently changed the privacy calculus. It seems arbitrary that some have freedoms and some don’t.

While you dialed AOL to get on the Internet, the goal of AOL was to keep you locked into their proprietary content and thus earned the classification of “walled garden.&# They had a proprietary browser, their own search engine, their own content, chat rooms, email system, etc.

The irony is that in a retrospective paper ten years later (1998), [ 2 ] the authors backed off from their claims. In 1998 Goto.com , a small startup (later Overture, now part of Yahoo ! ), created the pay per click search engine and advertising system and demo’d it at the TED conference. By then it was too late.

However, one area where he fell short was in ignoring the search engine market. While Microsoft introduced MSN Search in 1998, the site purely used an existing search engine, Inktomi, to gather results. In 2009, Microsoft introduced Bing, but it has never measured up to the popularity of Google.

After my column a few months ago regarding Jeff Bezos' now famous (and incredibly profitable) investment into Google in 1998, I was deluged with comments and opinions on this question - was his investment luck or was it foresight?
