One of the successful investments was a company called Nigenisis, which ended becoming a public company in 1999. So having spent a lot of time thinking about this Silicon Valley is a thing in and of itself. So everybody goes through this phase of we want to be the next Silicon Valley. That is a personality type.

Some were Silicon Valley early stage companies, such as Apple, Quantum, and Masstor Systems. For many years preceding 1999, the 1982 vintage was known as the industry’s worst vintage year. while none of the non-Silicon Valley regional firms were long-term successful as regional firms. Some worked; some did not.

Given the gold rush going on in Silicon Valley right now, it’s not surprising that some young entrepreneurs think it’s time to drop out and start a company. One of Silicon Valley’s biggest problems is that too many waste time building stuff that doesn’t matter. Not surprising, but still stupid.

I asked Harshil to focus his entire product and go-to-market strategy on the college-bound age 18 market and develop his assessment module, vertical search engine for colleges and trust network to address the needs of that market and that market alone. I advised Anupam to come up with a 2011 strategy.

The WSJ reports that hollywood is now thinking of producing TV shows and movies centered around the life of tech entrepreneurs and engineers. ’s Bravo television network is launching a reality show based on the lives of little-known Silicon Valley entrepreneurs this year. This is exactly what happened in the broader VC industry between 1999-2001 as many people without the requisite skills entered the industry. How about teaching engineering at Stanford and seeing the best & brightest before they’re even out in the wild. I will publish what I believe the five are in a series of articles.

Years later this area would become known as Silicon Valley. But I learned that in Silicon Valley, honest failure is a badge of experience. In 1999… with the company’s revenue north of $100 million…I handed the keys to a new CEO and left. My third story is about Failure and Redemption.
