I sold the FIL I got from investing in their SAFT as it vested (daily) and was amazed at how much money resulted. It’s like the Internet was in 1999 – ahead of its time. I accidentally bought twice as many bitcoins as I needed for an online programming course I took in 2013 for about $100 each. That’s cool.

Startup employees calculated that a) their hard work could change the odds and b) someday the stock options they were vesting might make them into millionaires. The stock trickled out over four years, as you would “vest” 1/48 th of the option each month. Essentially the company sells them the stock at zero cost, and they reverse vest.

And weirdly the buyers of this technology often have a vested interest in buying from the incumbent. In 1999-2000 they weren’t doing enterprise-wide installations at Merrill Lynch, Dell and Cisco. In fact, the incumbent is usually very dismissive of this new competition as our the large buyers of the incumbent’s products.

Before Roving Software could receive its first round of financing from professional investors, in early 1999, he had to put all the stock arrangements in writing. He suggests granting the options on day one but making sure they vest only upon satisfactory completion of the project. Dont overlook federal and state securities laws.

First of all, the long-term woes of the stock market have been under-reported because there really isn’t anyone that has a vested interest in pointing it out. And many of them asked – does it portend a “Japan” situation for the U.S.

Stock vests for 4 years. It was 1999. You get 1%, you sell for $150 million and it’s in 3 years (e.g. you won the lottery). That’s an after-tax gain of $287,500 / year for 2 years. Wait a second. You didn’t get acceleration on a change of control? Sorry bud. It was easy to do these calcs.
