Thanks to assistance from SBIR-funded research, iRobot was able to conquer the thorny challenge of moving a project from the demonstration stage to a marketable and profitable product. In 2000, when a slowdown in the industry forced a sharp refocusing of the company’s efforts, UEC enlisted the SBDC in helping expand into federal contracting.

And so it happened that between 2000-2008 I was the biggest buzz kill at dinner parties. This is the time it takes for a bankruptcy or asset sale to occur. I believe that huge financial, productivity and technical gains come from new innovation rather than derivative thinking. Or a quick flip. We’ll re-compare notes then.

Ironically, the founder of Netflix, Reed Hastings, made an offer to Blockbuster to buy out Netflix for $50 million in 2000. The deal could not materialize — and now the situation is such that the success of Netflix was one of the primary reasons behind the bankruptcy of Blockbuster. However, the product was ahead of its time.

The truth is that in my experience very, very few people really enjoy the “pure&# startup environment: months with no salary, months with no live product and lots of trial, error & rejection. Mostly you read about fundings, product releases, big valuations, and M&A. of your product. Great new product release.
