Social Networks: Past, Present & Future. However, Elgg could power 100,000 networks and it would make no difference - there is no revenue stream as we give everything away under a GPL license. However, there are lots of companies that are making money from open source and freemium models. Luckily Harold Jarche pointed us to other discussion on open source models.

Cloud computing and the open source movements have brought down the costs of starting a company by more than 90%. The movie, “The Social Network” might have had more of an impact on creating future entrepreneurs than any other event of the past 5 years. In 1998 there were around 850 VC funds and by 2000 there were 2,300.

Though after the dotcom collapse of 2000-2001, there are many more than there were! You can also look for CTO consultants in the same places you’ll find a lead developer: local technology user groups or meetups, conferences, and online communities (especially open-source software communities).

Even more interesting is that at GRP Partners (the VC firm where I’m a partner) our two most successful returns from our previous fund [which is ranked as the top performing fund in the country for its 2000 vintage according to Prequin] were both run by women! On AWS and with open source you can achieve amazing results for $500k.

I’m a child of the 1970s, who was routinely promised flying cars in the future, and wrote school essays about what life would be like in the year 2000. Companies like Chris Anderson’s 3D Robotics have built, along with the open source community, the ArduPilot, a sub-$500 autopilot for unmanned drones.
