Often, when startup founders first assemble teams, they hire familiar people – either people they know, or people like them. Those are good reasons to be friends, but poor reasons to hire someone. When you want to hire someone, you should strictly focus on hiring the best possible person for the open job.

My original post was directed at hiring managers. It said that I didn’t believe it was a good idea to hire job hoppers. My view still stands – for many hiring managers a large factor in looking through resumes of somebody who is 30+ and has never worked somewhere for more than 18 months will be the job hopping element.

Even though I had done it before, I had never heard the term sharding before joining Google (early 2003) so I always thought the term originated there.
