In 2004 I funded IMVU, a startup by Will Harvey and Eric Ries. ARPA-E joined the program this year, and in the fall we’ll teach a Life Science version of the class at UCSF. While I had open-sourced all my lectures and put them online via Udacity , I was getting requests to teach other educators how teach the class.

At this point, we have our own open-sourced click tracking "lil brother," an internal data visualization tool built on Rickshaw, as well as an A/B testing platform called Absinthe. We''ve had to design and implement training programs to help on-board people to our culture and technology.

Lets look at RabbitMQ for example – which though written in Erlang was acquired by SpringSource as a messaging engine to underpin a Java-based programming model. But Java is certainly core to the innovation. The Apache Software Foundation can hardly keep up with the pipeline of cool new technologies.
