But did you know that founder Markus Frind has just 3 employees for his $10MM+ revenue business? Unfortunately they will be very expensive (30-50% or more of gross revenue). Cloud computing and the open source movements have brought down the costs of starting a company by more than 90%. LP contributions to VC firms shrunk from 2000 and by 2005-2008 had stabilized to around $30 billion per year. Web businesses can now grow revenue before they can even afford sales people.

It seems that the open source business model has been top of mind for many in the technology industry as of late. Isn’t this the antithesis of what open source stands for? JBoss and RHAT clearly seemed to be building their own middleware and open source stacks while at the same time claiming an open architecture.

Of course, as an open source project when you start mixing all these elements together from different sources, you have possible compatibility issues, you have security issues, you’ve got ease of use, who can you trust, who do you go for support, all that kind of stuff. Still to this day never bores me.

37signals has several other products, but Basecamp accounts for about 60% of their projected $8 million in 2008 revenue. On the financials alone, 37signals should be worth about $80 million (10X revenue). You know you have a killer product when people start ascribing emotions to it. development framework and write a book.
