How is the VC Asset Class Doing?

One of the things I pointed out in my prior post was that even though the 2007 vintage was 10 years old, the vast majority of the value was still unrealized. If we compare the 2007 vintage data today vs. what we looked at 2 years ago, it gives us a sense of how much liquidity that vintage has enjoyed in the last couple years.

At the other end of the spectrum large funds have gotten even larger in the past few years which has massively increased the amount of consolidation in our industry as 66% of LP money into venture is now concentrated in late-stage or full-cycle VCs. 2007 was the watershed year. Why is this?

While I don’t have portfolio level stats for them, their new endeavor Foundry Next (to invest in smaller funds and then follow-on into key investments) has built up an LP basket of 23 positions in a variety of new VC funds. The geographic breakdown of our 123 direct investments follows: Twelve years later, we were pretty close.

Why The SBIC Doesn’t Work For Venture Capital Anymore

On paper, only one is in positive return territory as a fund, but the SBIC leverage is a substantial negative factor for the LP investors in that particular fund. As a partner in one of the most visible VC firms in Colorado and an LP in many of the Colorado VC firms, I’ve never heard from Matthew or anyone from the SBIC.

We had a blast together and as we went out to raise our Foundry 2007 fund, Scott made several introductions which resulted in two wonderful, long term LP relationships. They ignored us. A year or two later they had less than 3% market share on mobile. That’s how a friendship develops, at least in my world.
