Nelson Gray , Europe’s 2008 Angel of the Year, suggests that crowd funding may lead to the “dead-end of an uninvestable proposition.”. Angels and venture capitalists (VCs) have typically been reluctant to fund companies that have previously raised money from large numbers (over 30) of friends and family and other inexperienced investors.

Intermix was in a turnaround situation when I arrived in mid-2004, having been delisted from Nasdaq and nearly bankrupt. VantagePoint Venture Partners came to the rescue in late 2003 with an infusion of $15 million in capital, adding Andrew Sheehan (now at Sutter Hill Ventures ) and David Carlick (now at Rho Ventures ) to the Board.

The Ohio TechAngels adapted this valuation methodology in 2008 to meet their needs and named it the Bill Payne Method. The valuation method described herein was also detailed in my book, the Definitive Guide to Raising Money from Angels (2006, available on Gust).

How excited am I likely to be when I see a plan for a 2008-model buggy whip? A given business starts with an idea, and while the idea may (and likely will) change over time, it has to be good on some basic level for it to be able to succeed in the long run. another me-too social network?
