You hire people too fast, you over build your products, you try to force market adoption and you do PR blitzes before your product is really ready for prime time. And they seem to have been going really slow in building out the team and you certainly don’t see a ton of too-early PR blitzes from them.

Or Salesforce.com who rose to prominence in this same period where they were ramping up PR and shouting from mountain tops when everybody else in the market was mute.

Will you get the TechCrunch bump, the tier-1 VC anointment, followed by great PR firm support and then the NY Times or WSJ story that follows? So as I get around the country speaking at college campus in 2010 & 2011 I have been preaching the same theme. That’s a problem in need of a solution – I’m sure.

When competitors raise money and you don’t the following happens (assuming all else equal on product development, which I know is not always the case): they have a PR advantage both in terms of perceived momentum and also money to spend on it. They get the PR bump. The market is over-valued in 2011 relative to norms.
