Patent trolls are an easy one, but heavy handed regulatory activity by incumbents and random lawsuits around acquisitions are also part for the course. I’ve always loved his hacker spirit, amazing ability to do things no one else could envision, and willingness to open source a lot of his work to lead the way for others.

The same can be said of Facebook and its acquisition of Oculus, along with its recent full-frontal assault against Snapchat AR filters and lenses. Google also likely has the best computer vision experts, datasets, and algorithms on the planet. Microsoft has been working on this for about a decade.

For three years I worked at Bug Labs (open source hardware company). We not only told everyone what we did, we posted the source code and the blueprints online. flavor of a question-and-answer, poll-your-friends site with a distant revenue model and no user acquisition strategy. Nobody ever stole our ideas.

But this is just the kindthat tends to be open source: operating systems, programminglanguages, editors, and so on. So the acquisition came toa screeching halt while we tried to sort this out. But its hard to raise money with an IP cloud over your head, becauseinvestors cant judge how serious it is. Dont do what we did.
