And of course many of you know this is near and dear to me because my own father is from Medellín, Colombia so I grew up in a household with the music, food, culture and language of South America. By almost any objective standard, paying into the billions of dollars for businesses with little revenues and/or significant operating losses - as is the case with all the companies mentioned above - is absurd. And a lot more of it comes from massive commodities-driven wealth in places like Russia, Africa, South America, and the Middle East.

The fiction that strong patent rights lead to more domestic VC investment is highly damaging and utterly false in software, an industry where low capital intensity and low barriers to entry make product and user acquisition, not “IP,” king. The tax situation and cost of living in, say, South America, is much better than in the U.S.
