One of the common questions that I commonly get is: Tony, what inputs should we use as the basis for our matching algorithm? How should the resulting algorithm use those inputs to form matches? Is the resulting algorithm okay to use in your startup? fit into a matching algorithm. This is classic filtering.

Because I was the Acting CTO for eHarmony at it's start, I quite often get introduced to people who have an idea for a startup company that is based on some kind of matching algorithm. Each of these startup ideas has at it's core a matching algorithm that reduces the friction between a consumer and some need. There's no mystery.

Results of Algorithms. Often you can't tell if something like a search engine or matching algorithm is really going to have better results until you use it. To get an investor excited about another MP3 player at the time, they would have needed to play with the interface.

The rest is just down and dirty algorithmic programming. But if you are building anything with significant functionality to it, then first, don't believe the 10x. You may get 3x improved speed for roughly 10-20% of the effort of building your site. It won't be significantly different in most languages.

If there’s some really secret sauce, let’s say a special Matching Algorithm , you maybe can hide some of the details of it. I personally believe the best answer is to provide what you would to an investor. You don’t ask for an NDA from an investor before presenting. Don’t ask it from a technical person. Finally, we get to the fun part.
