Virgin America. The host was interviewing somebody who was equating unpaid or low-paid internships with oppression of workers rights and shouldn’t be allowed. So I called in and took the other side of that debate referring to myself solely as “Mark” and I think the host mentioned that I was an investor.

I agree with YouTube (that they provide more (hosting, ad sales, etc.) 8% of every dollar spent in America is spent at Walmart – astounding, I know. .” YouTube takes 45%. YouTube hates this comparison and claims they provide so much more to their ecosystem than Apple does to its iOS ecosystem.

The panel was hosted by Jason Nazar who brought his usual frenetic energy. There was the usual cogent presentation by Brian Solis on the future of PR in which he implored us to get beyond the echo chamber of Silicon Valley and Techmeme and focus on staying on the radar screen of real America.

Not just because meeting Clayton was influential in shaping my thinking about markets but also because Derek Andersen (who founded Startup Grind) is such an awesome host and runs a very informative events. He grew up in Colombia, South America. Should we put it in Amazon or should we have hosting here? It’s hard.

When I worked at Salesforce we had “city tours” in which a senior exec on our team would fly to a city in America (eventually globally) and host an event with customers and prospects. Building a community goes well beyond hosting events. It’s no wonder they’ve both performed so well. That hasn’t changed. just to name a few.

I have never been more optimistic about the impact that the tech startup community is having on cities in America or about the role that cities outside of San Francisco / Silicon Valley can play in our future. I just returned from 3 days in Cincinnati including attending the annual meeting of one of Upfront’s LPs – Cintrifuse.
