NEW ALBUM WEEK: Consciousness (Pt. 2): A Path to Enlightenment by Persefone - This is not all that well-known of a band or at least as well-known as they should be. These prog metal masters hail from Andorra and have been weaving their stew of death metal, melodeath, symphonic core, and several other strains of metal since 2004. As with most prog acts, it works in stutters and spurts, but when it works, it is face melting, jaw-dropping levels of awesome.
Their latest album Spiritual Migration pushes further the prog envelope with soaring symphonic heights, death grinding chugging, and melodramatic interludes. It does not all come together when they cop other styles instead of melding them though. So while it is not as excellent as their last album Shin-Ken, it is still a solid album. The guitarist in me immediately latched onto the two part Consciousness instrumental tracks, and part two is a clinic is guitar wizardry, highlighting the keen musicianship of the band. The thing goes in plenty of directions, but it is a wild journey worth taking.
If you are into the heavier side of prog metal, this is a band worth checking out, though I would go with Shin-Ken as the first album to check out.
