But more importantly, the labor of moving software around by humans and physical media and even the Internet has been taken down to almost zero. It vastly reduces computer waste.

Bandwidth and hosting charges were expensive. So if a VC wants to work with really talented early-stage entrepreneurs there are times where they have to be willing to seed fund them in order to be in the deal. A very well known early stage fund used to have a rule that they didn’t do follow ons.

Sun Microsystems has a program called Startup Essentials [link] thats designed specifically to help early stage startups get into some great equipment, free software and other great stuff too. The bandwidth and level of service many of these companies provide for merely hundreds of dollars a month makes it a no-brainer.

I have always been a big believer of the hosted software or ASP (application service provider) model since we made our first investment in LivePerson in January 1999. I wrote a post months ago showing how far Kana had fallen, and how LivePerson stuck with its hosted software model and finally hit profitability. The world is changing.
