80’S TUESDAY: Secrets by Mission of Burma - Time for some punk to get things going this morning. Mission of Burma was a little known local Boston band in the early 80’s that managed to have an outsized influence on the future of alternative music. In many ways, they were simply ahead of their time, using techniques like tape loops, composing oft-kilter tunes, and writing witty lyrics that could easily have made them huge stars a decade later(which was later realized when they reformed in 2002), but was lost on most audiences at the time.
In their first iteration, they only released one full length album, Vs., but it was an instant classic. Secrets launches the album and in typical Mission of Burma fashion, it has no real conventional structure. It starts with a Swope tale effect, then a sonic wall of guitar riffing and drums that feels like it is about to fall apart at any moment. Only 2/3 of the way in do they start with the lyrics. They threw convention out the window and you have to admire that in a time when even punk and hardcore had fallen into predictable patterns.
