CHICAGO WEEK 80’S TUESDAY: Cables by Big Black - There might have been a pop scene in Chicago in the 80’s, but the scene that was really flourishing was hardcore followed soon after by alternative. And in those early years as hardcore was taking hold in hotbeds like LA and DC and NYC, one Chicago band started to gain a following everywhere else but Chicago. Steve Albini may be more of a household name as the legendary engineer for Nirvana and Pixies, but he got his start as the abrasive and opinionated front man for Big Black.
This is either a band you love or really hate. Their drummer was a drum machine, the music was difficult to listen to, and their disdain for fans was pretty self-evident. But in many ways their brand of hardcore became the precursor for many industrial bands. But man, some of those songs were just out there such as the song Cables from the Bulldozer EP in 1983. It is a song about a guy that got his enjoyment from slaughterhouses. But in a perverse way, with the clanging guitar sounds and bizarre rhythms, you had one of their best and “catchiest” songs.
