Many companies don’t reach the next phase either because their leadership doesn’t adapt as an organization or because they don’t design processes that lead to scaled outcomes. We spent a few hundred thousand dollars opening up operations in Chicago and Washington D.C. and we were met with weak demand, slow growth and high costs.

It’s predictable, there is no reason to get mad about it and with a well-designed play book you can overcome this much of the time. New York, Chicago, Boston, etc. This is a very common scenario when entrepreneurs pitch VCs and frankly is a very common scenario when VCs try to raise money from LPs.

Some of our most successful deals have been in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Baltimore and London. VC has operated as an “old boys club”, with access to capital often requiring entrance through an elite university engineering department in one of two cities.

It’s a very smartly designed debenture program. I also learned about this amazing resource in Chicago called BuiltInChicago which I intend to use for my trip there in November. I know that theres a lot of GroupOn bashing still in the press, but you can’t deny the kickstart its had on the local Chicago tech community.

Is it any surprise to see Zulily in Seattle, Wayfair in Boston, ExactTarget in Indianapolis, TrueCar in Los Angeles, GroupOn in Chicago or BuzzFeed in NYC? These are industries that start to open up new commercial zones like Cincinnati (home to P&G & Kroger) and Chicago. Deflationary Economics now favors us.

Fortunately I was mostly a technology consultant, which meant that I coded computers, designed databases and planned system integration projects. But these people went to slightly better schools (Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, University of Chicago) and got slightly better grades. It was originally COBOL and DB2 – so what?
