If you’re goal is to get a valuation and sell then you need to be especially sure you have a good idea. Go the extra mile to find the coder who stays up all night and the graphic designer who spends their free time in museums. The first and biggest key in a start up is the idea. To get great results you need great people.

One manager talked about how they were a bit bummed because Yahoo had just surpassed their market valuation. Nobody seemed excited about open-sourcing the code, the original people were leaving, the coder gurus projected strange attitudes to a lowly candidate. During lunch came another red flag. I didn’t want to work there.

Along the way, I was hired full time (I believe about 8 months after I started), a coder from India was hired and another contractor was added to the team. already some initial funding does the company already have a valuation? I was originally hired as a contractor, developing a SaaS app from scratch, including DB design and coding.

Valuations were enormous relative to progress in companies. Companies with less than $2 million in revenue were asking for $50-60 million valuations and getting them. I spent my days meeting companies, figuring out what areas of the market interested me and trying to get a sense for how VCs thought about fair valuations.
