Especially when there are things like: Amazon S3 / EC2 / AWS outage this morning. Of course, there are still caveats - can they pass data security audits, what is your downtime risk and cost of downtime, what's the risk of the platform vendor. Benefit of a proprietary platform can be finding customers. I would tend to agree.

Another thing that became increasingly useful was to have thousands of custom stats aggregated over thousands of servers graphed. It might cost a little extra to force everything to be in one of your categories, but I think it’s worth it for the simplicity (you can also switch machines around more easily when you need to).

Currently, the easiest setup is with Rackspace, where Standing Cloud can automatically assign a billing account to you; this easy setup is coming soon for GoGrid and Amazon EC2. Through September 30, the only fees Standing Cloud is charging is for the server time and bandwidth usage; after that it will cost an additional $19.95/month

This is not about getting sucked into buzzwords on the cloud but really understanding the cost savings and performance benefits a company can get from transitioning some of their infrastructure to a Google-like model. Yes there are public clouds like Amazon EC2 which is now also offering virtualized private clouds.
