In recent years, weve also got great new options all up and down the stack, in particular things like Amazon EC2 and RightScale (none of which would be possible without the free software movement). Since that time we've seen a massive change from product engineering to financial engineering.

This is an EC2 test run on a pair of Large instances. Application performance can be directly mapped to hosting dollars, and for a start-up company in its infancy, hosting costs can be a pain point. Weak performance can also cause premature scale pain, user experience degradation, and associated penalties levied by search engines.

any real-world engineering project ;-). It might cost a little extra to force everything to be in one of your categories, but I think it’s worth it for the simplicity (you can also switch machines around more easily when you need to). S3/EC2 for storing and serving file blocks. is it worth the engineering or product cost?)

Especially when there are things like: Amazon S3 / EC2 / AWS outage this morning. Of course, there are still caveats - can they pass data security audits, what is your downtime risk and cost of downtime, what's the risk of the platform vendor. Amazon EC2 - uses it for natural language processing. Not sure I buy that argument.

Veritas , the team building a low cost, residential wind turbine. But the big project for the week was testing and analyzing Customer Acquisition Costs. The most optimistic estimates showed that the residential wind turbine market was less than $20m in year 5 and the costs to acquire the customers made this a money-losing business.
