After six months, I was able to sign up a local CTO to help build a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) that enabled me to secure funding. Front office teams (sales and marketing, for example) should be in their home market while the back office (IT and operations) can be anywhere. Not All Functions Need To Be Together.

Pitch an idea :) Usually somewhere in the pitch the listener will ask if you’d also be interested in being a CEO, CTO, etc at something they are already funding! Oh and I’m learning one other cool thing if I ever need it – you don’t need to hire a head hunter if you want a high level executive tech job.

And from all the office chatter come norms and beliefs. CEO, VP Products and CTO must all be in the physical location. I prefer the first sales hires to be in the home office.

Maybe this is because I run offshore software development company and have seen a LOT of people coming asking for help after dealing with freelancers. Sales is more difficult and more important that you think, if you build it they wont just come. Personally I cant imagine myself hiring devs from Odesk, etc. Very important!
