But by the time I was building my first websites for commercial use , PHP had taken over. Writing unit tests or mock objects in PHP is an exercise in constant frustration.

So what does CTO mean, besides just "technical founder who really cant manage anyone?" So I initially gravitated to the CTO title, and not VP of Engineering.

We had an interesting presentation at the LA CTO Forum by the CTO of a startup who chose Groovy / Grails as the framework for their startup. t prompted a good discussion around how CTOs go about choosing the programming language and framework for their startup. Ive occasionally worked with executive recruiters, for example in hiring a CTO for my first company, Eve.com. Programming Language - many top engineers I spoke with prefer python and dont like working in PHP. To sum up, heres what I would do again as a non-technical founder looking for a technical co-founder or CTO.

I've helped organize the Los Angeles CTO Forum for almost 10 years. As part of doing that, I've had the opportunity to interact with a wide variety of different chief technical officers from different kinds of companies over those years. But not really CTO events. or focused on industry or type of company.
