And the wrong message is frankly strewn all over Silicon Valley. And this is fueled by the VC culture in Silicon Valley. I think the one thing that niggles me that most is reserving the word “startup” for only super-growth, Silicon Valley style businesses. Or pivoted too quickly.

Much has been written about when it is time to hire a “professional CEO” to run a startup company and of course that has long been a norm in Silicon Valley when founders find that their inexperience may be a limiting factor in company growth ( know as the Peter Principle ). So why did Larry need to return?

I also got the insights of her biggest champion from within Andreessen Horowitz, Margit Wennmachers , who talked me through when she first met Meredith, how she’s grown, the maturity of Meredith to interact with Silicon Valley’s good & great and be nonplussed about it.

And just so it’s clear that I practice what I preach … When it was time to bring on a CTO at Maker Studios in the early days, I passed over many local LA video CTOs and found the one guy I KNEW could deliver magic for us. We brought Ryan Lissack down from San Francisco to become Maker’s CTO and the rest is history.

Another major hire was Ryan Lissack who joined as CTO. Needless to say I think Ryan is one of the most talented engineering leads in LA but I’d stack him against anybody in the Valley, too. We would have gladly followed Jamie (and Josh Roth, the CTO who is phenomenal and we’ve also known for a decade) right through an IPO if we could have. That was probably one step further away from the Silicon Valley ethos than even Shark Tank! we were sold on the concept immediately. He was dogmatic. He was self-assured.
