Finding great engineers is hard; figuring out whos good is even harder. For software engineers, I think this absolutely has to be a programming problem solved on a whiteboard. I have found this quite rare in engineers. At the time, I was a die-heard Java zealot. Thats fine for the start of their interview process.

At IMVU, when wed hire a new engineer, we could get them to ship code to production on their first day, even if they had never programmed in PHP before. I didnt mean by this that Java programmers are dumb. I havent had a reason to try Python, but I certainly know Java and C# and ASP.NET pretty well. Enough about that.

The human tendency to moralize about debt affects engineers, too. This reverses the standard intuition about what engineering activities add value, which usually concludes that test coverage is a form of necessary waste but a refactoring is value-added work. These kinds of design are mostly orthogonal.

Im the founder of Buffer. The interesting thing I’ve found is that as a startup founder you often have to transition from a maker to a manager, and there will also be a period of time when you need to be both at once.
