In Web Framework Benchmarks , there are some very interesting and surprising numbers around the performance of various web frameworks. I was also surprised by the performance improvement on dedicated hardware as compared to EC2 instances of roughly 10x. Startup Founders really need to see these numbers.

Here is one summary graph that we found the most useful: The top line represents average response time on the site (we had one of these graphs for web traffic, and one for client traffic). In between the last failover and now, there have been a bazillion code pushes, database schema changes, internal DNS renames, etc.

We picked a write oriented benchmark using the standard Cassandra "stress" tool that is part of the product, and Denis ran and analyzed the tests on Amazon EC2 instances. The time taken by EC2 to create 288 new instances was about 15 minutes out of our total of 66 minutes. All instances are created using the EC2 auto-scaler feature.
