They have an expectation that the IPO will be in 3 years and they were in at the ground floor. All deals – especially (but not only) those that got venture funded. In LA we have www.socaltech.com but in every market there’s some sort of database. I don’t think that hairy dentists really expect that.

I recently had an extensive debate with Tom about why and whether small funds (like mine, ff Venture Capital ) tend to outperform large funds (like his). I argue that, just as with hedge funds and mutual funds, the larger the venture capital fund, the more difficult it is to generate strong returns.
