My prediction is that we will gradually see more consolidation in venture if a) underlying inflows into the category slow over a longer period of time and if b) more asset value is created by smaller funds that integrate proprietary software or data in their businesses.

Certain sectors are seeing remarkable tailwinds, such as ecommerce (especially household consumables), digital entertainment, collaboration software, and health and fitness. Unevenly distributed, but broadly optimistic. I think it’s tough to truly pull off building a distributed team, and it needs to be done with a lot of intention.

The old brands and distribution channels are dead or dying. Maybe they will get there, but I think that the experiential nature of the category — both in terms of the actual products and the brand experience — mean that this will play out very differently from other categories like media or consumer electronics.
