I seldom hire patent attorneys during due diligence but this was too important. We hired OSHA regulatory lawyers. We hired IP specialists to review prior art. She connected me with Andreessen’s due diligence team who were surprisingly open with all the technical analysis they had done.

GRP Partners is looking to hire two analysts (maybe even three) to join our practice in Los Angeles. But every time I do recruiting I get so many applicants that don’t come close to the spec that I feel I have to put up at least some filters to avoid people unlikely to be hired from putting in too much work.

I’d like to separate these from “skeletons in your closet&# which are issues that the VC would have no idea about when you’re meeting but might discover later during due diligence. I hired an executive recruiter and had 7 finalist candidates that I interviewed. And in the end I hired him.

100 get serious due diligence where the entrepreneur meets with several people from the firm. Management should communicate how the board can help - strategy, markets, key hires, introductions. From those, 1000 get a quick no because it’s not the right fit. Then 500 of those get a one hour meeting.
