I do already see a return of normalcy on the amount of time investors have to conduct due diligence and make sure there is not only a compelling business case but also good chemistry between the founders and investors. 40% of our deals are done in Los Angeles but 100% of our deals leverage the LA networks we have built for 25 years.

I seldom hire patent attorneys during due diligence but this was too important. We hired IP specialists to review prior art. We grilled their IP attorneys. She connected me with Andreessen’s due diligence team who were surprisingly open with all the technical analysis they had done. It was impressive.

Taking it from an investor perspective (not me, angels) I think it’s totally unfair to see early angels invest, take more risk, help you get to the next level through both sweat & money, and then pay a higher price because the round had a convertible note with no cap.

Currently Los Angeles is in what could be a startup renaissance or an apocalypse, dependent on how long the hype goes on.
