In recent years, weve also got great new options all up and down the stack, in particular things like Amazon EC2 and RightScale (none of which would be possible without the free software movement). At the application-stack layer, I see LAMP + Danga as the most common combination. Otherwise it's a great idea.

Technologies we used. S3/EC2 for storing and serving file blocks. S3/EC2 for storing and serving file blocks. GeoIP for mapping IPs to locations. When you want to display times to a user, make the timezone conversion happen at the last second. memcached in front of the database and for handling inter-server coordination.

We are on the high end of the range, and I think expecting less would be unrealistic unless you are building something really simple (and therefore with limited inherent IP). Jackie: I would recommend instead Amazons EC2 and S3 platforms. Our product is fairly complex and Matt also nails the budget pretty well. Nice article.

We picked a write oriented benchmark using the standard Cassandra "stress" tool that is part of the product, and Denis ran and analyzed the tests on Amazon EC2 instances. The time taken by EC2 to create 288 new instances was about 15 minutes out of our total of 66 minutes. All instances are created using the EC2 auto-scaler feature.
