I am heavily indebted to earlier theorists, and highly recommend the books Lean Thinking and Lean Software Development. Of course, many startups are capital efficient and generally frugal.

My conclusion: if you’re a software engineer, with good technical background and ability, you can pretty much write your own ticket in Southern California. cloud computing (Amazon AWS and EC2, etc.) and even bigger, architecture-level talent (particularly software architects who know how to scale a web based service or software).

Third-party software companies will start to offer features to websites to actually drive social features. At the bottom end of the stack is storage (S3) and processing (EC2). There will be other layers including place information and open-source data. Social Networking Will Split Into Layers.

As most of you will know, the enablers are cloud computing and open source software. Pinterest now supports 18m users with growth running at 50% per month with the following: Amazon costs are around $39k for S3 and $30k for EC2 (I assume per month). They have 275 EC2 instances. 70 master databases.
