Even young people who start out wanting to be different are called “freaks,” and most are slowly bent back into the norm by the time they “grow up.” Maybe that’s why so many entrepreneurs struggle with building a disruptive new business, where breaks from the norm are the key to success.

'I seem to get this call a lot. It’s a business owner in desperation, seeking immediate help with employees. The question is inevitably a variation of how do I get them to do X. Here’s the dealio. You can’t inspire any employee to do anything for you, without one key element: Trust. Surely you could put a gun to someone’s head or threaten their welfare and people will respond.

'Some of my friends hate email. I’m contrarian here – for me the benefits of email still outweigh other alternatives, especially as communication channels are turning into app-specific silos. But the frontend of email could really evolve into more dynamic and collaborative spaces. While we wait for that to happen there are small changes which would make the medium more effective.
