Hollow by Alice in Chains - This is a band that is both as revered as it is cursed. Revered in the sense that AIC stands as one of the greatest metal bands of the 90’s, in large due to the dynamic song writing duo of Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley. Yet that also meant success rested heavily on that combustible combination of talent, and given Layne’s drug addiction, was not something that could be taken for granted.
I have been on the fence with the post-Staley era. Clearly, Jerry is hugely talented. William DuVall is a capable singer. The music sounds like AIC. Yet Black Gives Way to Blue was not something I was wholly sold on when they released the album back in 2009. They now have a new single for an upcoming album early next year and it sounds like classic AIC. It does not move the needle in breaking new ground, but it does find a firm and comfortable place. The second era of AIC is coming into its own, and though I wished they move away from resurrecting Layne, they do a serviceable job here with the pre-release single Hollow. I am looking forward to hearing the new album and seeing how things shape up for AIC.
