Color Me Impressed by The Replacements - Could not end a week of the ‘Mats without something on the more punk end of the scale. Hootenanny was a bit of an oddball album, situated between their hardcore outing Stink and one of the greatest albums of all time with Let It Be. This is classic 'Mats though; their cavalier attitude towards success, fame, or seriousness. So they make an album that is simply weird and disjointed, demonstrated in full effect by the lead track where they all switch instruments in some ghastly mess of a song. Even the album cover is strange.
Just when you are about to pass them off, there is a song like Color Me Impressed. If there is one song which could be considered a Replacement blueprint, this would be it. It is the sardonic, loserville Westerberg lyrics, the straight rocking rhythm, and Bob Stinson’s guitar wanderings. Hope you enjoyed this week of Replacements songs and have an excellent weekend!
