Unicorn deals – not that heavily structured

The Equity Kicker

Last May law firm Fenwick and West published an analysis of the 37 US unicorn deals that happened in the twelve months ending 31st March 2015. It’s an old post which I saw for the first time this morning. Here’s the headline data on the deals: Mean valuation: $4.4bn. Median valuation: $1.6bn. 35% of companies had valuations in the $1.0-1.1bn range, indicating many companies negotiated specifically to get unicorn status.

The Shrike

Feld Thoughts

Yesterday, the Shrike paid me a visit in Boulder. That’s Cooper hanging out in the backyard with his new friend. Now, before you go all serious movie history on me, I know it looks like a predator. But it is the closest sculpture to a Shrike that I’ve been able to find. So, even if it’s a predator, I’m going to call him Shrike.

Ukraine, Estonia, Chile, Finland: The saga of four accelerators

The Next Web

It’s hard to get the exact data on how many startup acceleration programs are being launched every year, but it’s definitely a lot. Hiring Developer Evangelists

David Cohen

I define “web infrastructure” companies as those (at least initially) targeted primarily at developers. They typically take the form of APIs and make life easier on the web for developers. I’ve invested early in many such companies including SendGrid , Twilio , FullContact , Stream and RunScope. Recently, one of our newer portfolio companies was looking for some advice from our network regarding hiring a developer evangelist.

The life success list you’ll never read elsewhere

And by the way, WTF is the point of being a billionaire or CEO, if you get up at 4.30am to do your personal trainer gym session before you beat every other cubicle dweller to the office before the sun comes up.

If It Hurts…

Mike Michalowicz

My wife dresses impeccably. If I criticized her ability to pick a good outfit, or told her that she has no clue how to dress, she would scoff. When you are criticized about something that isn’t true, it may not be fair, but it doesn’t hurt our self-perception. Conversely, if I criticized her for something that was true (even in part), the reaction would not be a scoff.

Should you really be in charge?

Start Up Blog

“YouTube is still the only place where you can passively monetize your content” – Online Content Evolution From Awestruck’s Sarah Penna

Sarah Penna is cool. That’s one of the things I had to get used to while at YouTube — that most of the friends I made from within the creative community would be a lot cooler than me.
