SATURDAY JAZZ BRUNCH: Delilah performed by Clifford Brown & Max Roach Quintet - The brunch is a bit later in the day as last night was a bit of a long night. Anyway I had Max Roach on the mind, the legendary jazz drummer, when I pulled up this gem. I will get back to Max at another juncture, but today is about the short life of Clifford Brown, the promising jazz trumpeter, who died in a car accident shortly after these sessions at the age of 25.
What he left behind was magical however, highlight by this album. There are plenty of great tunes, but I love what they do with Delilah. This was a tune from the great Cecil B. DeMille movie Samson and Delilah. They take the exotic however and turn it into the most sultry and smooth hard bop you will ever find. The interplay between Roach and Brown is about as intricate and intertwined as any you will hear between a soloist and a drummer.
