WORSHIP SUNDAY: Free by Stryper - I searched high and low, but there is no Christian music coming out of Boston or Massachusetts or New England for that matter. So what is Stryper doing in my “Rock of Boston” week? The lead singer and guitarist, Michael Sweet, had played with the band Boston for the past few years. Yes, it is a stretch, but if you can do better, please be my guest.
Truth be told, I did not like Stryper. It was not so much the fact that I was a strident atheist when I was younger, but the fact that Stryper was second rate glam metal. Years later however, as a Christian and somewhat mellowed by age, I can appreciate some, if not all, the music. I have to admit that Michael Sweet is an extremely talented musician. He has incredible vocal range, blistering guitar licks, and can credibly play several other instruments.
The song Free is probably the best of the tunes. Off of their mega-hit album To Hell With The Devil, it was the first single released and the first Christian rock video to be an MTV number one hit. Even with all the hair metal trappings, it is decent tune and some positive lyrics to boot
