How to launch a crowdfunding campaign when time’s not on your side

The Next Web

'Jackson Bond is the co-founder of Relayr , the team behind the WunderBar - a set of wireless detachable sensors and smart modules, all of which can be monitored and controlled from your phone and web apps. After deciding to launch a crowdfunding campaign for our product, we landed on the date of December 16th, 2013. Nothing about this sounds out of the ordinary, except that we had chosen this date just four weeks prior to when we needed to launch.

Billion or Bust?

thebarefootvc

'I just wrote a short piece which Quartz published today. I’m re-posting below. Do I think we are in a valuation bubble? I think that later stage valuations are frothy (for reasons I explain below) while earlier stage valuations are starting to stabilize from previous highs (with the exception of the superstar serial entrepreneur) - turns out scaling in a sea of competition (both startup and entrenched) is not so easy.

Entrepreneurs Relish The Challenge More Than Money

Startup Professionals Musings

'Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the best entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley and elsewhere. On the average, the entrepreneurs I know are living on Ramen noodles. But one thing they all seem to have in common is a love for learning and change. They rush in with a passion to better the world, and money is just an indication of their progress.

[Infographic] Singapore – The Startup-Friendly El Dorado

YoungUpstarts

'Singapore, as we know, is a startup-friendly city. As a technology and startup system it is supported by its government to some extent or another, and has attracted many entrepreneurs from around the region – and indeed from around the world – to start a company here. But is there any data supporting this? Apparently there is.

Mobile is eating the web

Version One Ventures

'Marc Andreesen famously said that “ software is eating the world.” Now it looks like mobile is eating the web. Back in 2010, Mary Meeker and Morgan Stanley predicted that within the next five years, “more users will connect to the Internet over mobile devices than desktop PCs.” We’ve arrived at that milestone. The shift from desktop to mobile, whether smartphone or tablet, is happening across a variety of activities.

The Rules of Inclusion

This is going to be BIG.

'I was talking to a female engineer turned product manager last week about her experience as one of the few women at a hackathon. While she didn''t experience anything particularly negative, she still didn''t feel particularly welcome. When you''re one of only a few people who look like you in a place, if the event is a free-for-all, it''s tough to break into new groups and connect with strangers.

VC industry data shows growth but no bubble

The Equity Kicker

'Recently I’ve been hearing a lot that there is a new bubble in Silicon Valley. People are worried that it will burst and we will feel the effects over here. They generally cite one off events like Snapchat turning down a $3bn acquisition or Google’s $3.2bn acquisition of Nest as evidence. This sort of debate seems to come round every year or two and my view today is that there are localised incidents of frothy behaviour but nothing widespread enough that we should call it a bubble.

'It’s really hard to be a CEO. Becoming a great CEO takes a lot of time, work, focus, coaching, and introspection. This year I’m going to be attending as a special guest and participating throughout the four day program.

'In Predictably Irrational , Dan Ariely recounts a study of coffee drinkers. When coffee was served to test subjects in fanciful dishware, complemented with condiments in beautiful glass and metal containers, they believed the coffee tasted better than when the same coffee and condiments were served in Styrofoam cups. The quality of the surroundings greatly influences the experience.

If you''re not familiar with the games, they pit teams from Austin startups against each other in such prestigious events as flip cup, foosball, and beer pong. The real winners at this event are the charities, as each team is playing for their favorite charitable organization.

Old School VC and Entrepreneurship Ideas

"Who are you? Where are you? How are you?"

aweissman.com

'Over the holiday, I was visiting my mother on the upper east side of Manhattan. To get to her place from the subway I needed to cross 86th Street at 3rd Avenue. I''ve been crossing that street since I was 5 years old, it''s a horribly crowded corner. On the east side of the street are public and private bus stops. On the west side are numerous retail shops and a movie theater, and at the corner is the famous Papaya King hot dog stand which attracts hungry cab drivers pulling over in front all d
