Jason Becker, born July 22 1969.
- At 16 he along with his friend, Marty Friedman formed a band, Cacophony. They released 2 albums and broke up shortly after to concentrate on their solo career.
- In 1988, he released his first solo album and later joined David Lee Roth band.
- At 20 was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig Disease and was given 3 -5 years to live.
- As a result of his illness, he began to limp and eventually lost his ability to walk, speak and move his entire body. Thus ending his career as a rock musician
- Given only a few years, he was only able to communicate with his eyes.
The end was near…or so it seemed.
- While his body was physically unable, his mind was very alert…like a prisoner trapped his own body.
- Not ready to give up, his father developed a computer system where he’s able to communicate with his eyes.
- Against all odds, he outlived doctors expectations and was also able to compose more songs, by use of computers and his eyes.
- He has since released several albums (Perspective, Raspberry Jams, Blackberry Jams, Collections, and a best of album). They may not have been commercially successful, but the fact that it was made is a testimony and triumph to his life.
- On his album he states “I have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. It has crippled my body and speech, but not my mind.”
While we may not be inflicted with Lou Gehrig’s disease (thankfully), we can learn a thing or two about Becker’s will and determination. There will be moments in our lives that will cripple us and giving up may seem like the only option. In those moments let us remember people like Jason Becker and countless others who have also faced adversities, yet refused to be defined by their circumstances and make giving up an option.
“Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall.” ~Confucius~
“When you are going through hell, keep on going. Never never never give up.” ~Winston Churchill~
“The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.”
~Rocky Balboa~
Jason Becker is more than some guitar shredder that I admired as a youth, but an inspiration and an example of determination and the will to live regardless of the circumstances.
