SATURDAY JAZZ BRUNCH: Soul Station by Hank Mobley - He does not get the recognition or accolades of tenor sax greats like John Coltrane or Sonny Rollins, but Hank Mobley is just as great in his own style. While he gained renown playing with the Jazz Messengers and with Miles Davis, he really shined as a band leader in his Blue Note recordings throughout the 60’s and early 70’s. What set him apart from many of his peers was his melodic and warm style, not in pushing the harmonic envelope. He painted wonderfully rich and vibrant compositions that were in many ways more approachable than the hard bop and cool jazz of the time.
Soul Station is Hank’s most notable album released 1960 and which led to quick succession of several other well regarding albums like Straight No Chaser or Roll Call. While I love the standards Remember and If I Should Lose You, the title track is very much in the vein of the Mobley bluesy groove. I could listen to this song all day on repeat it is that great.

Agree with all of this: a lovely, laid-back and unhurried tune.
