SHRED WEEK COVER FRIDAY: Moonage Daydream by Racer X - So we finally get to the Paul Gilbert portion of the program. This was the short-lived Shrapnel Records creation that put Paul Gilbert on the guitar legends map. While he clearly fell into the neo-classical strain of shred guitarists, he soon developed his own distinct style that was technically brilliant but did not take itself too seriously.
I am a sucker for a good David Bowie cover. His songs seem to lend themselves to unique creative renderings and some of my all-time favorite covers were originally Bowie songs. Moonage Daydream from the classic concept album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is no exception. They bring a speed metal take to the tune and add some blistering solos to the mix. This is definitely one of my favorite tunes on the Second Heat album.
As an aside, I assure you that despite Paul Gilbert’s penchant for doing Spice Girls and ABBA covers, he is the real deal shredder. Here is a video I posted last year of him performing one of his signature instrumental shred fests Scarified.
